WEST Perth dominated the first quarter against Subiaco at Medibank Stadium on Saturday but couldn’t keep it going eventually losing by 17 points despite a best on ground display again by Shane Nelson.

The Falcons were outstanding against the Lions in the twilight fixture at Leederville kicking 4.4 to no score in the opening quarter, but they managed only two more goals the rest of the evening with the Lions running out 9.11 (65) to 6.12 (48) winners.

The result means that West Perth now enters the bye with a 2-2 record after the opening four rounds of the season with losses to top two teams South Fremantle and Subiaco, and wins over Peel Thunder and Perth.

I IMAGINE that on previous occasions teams have been held scoreless in the first quarter and still won and that is exactly what happened at Medibank Stadium on Saturday.

West Perth dominated the first quarter to kick 4.4 and hold Subiaco scoreless but it wasn’t enough to set up victory. The Lions fought back to record a 17-point victory in the twilight match.

PREMIERSHIP coach Bill Monaghan wrote himself into the history books on Saturday night by being in charge for a 134th time making him the longest-serving coach in the history of the West Perth Football Club.

Monaghan has been senior coach at West Perth since 2009 and now on Saturday night by leading the Falcons into battle against reigning premiers Subiaco at Leederville's Medibank Stadium, he coached the club for a record 134rd time.

That sees him overtake the legendary Stan 'Pops' Heal who coached West Perth for 133 matches between 1947-52 during which time he was captain-coach for the premierships of 1949 and 1951.

THE West Perth Football Club can confirm that young key position player Tyler Keitel has been deemed eligible for a clearance to join the Falcons and he could start training as early as next week.

Over the past three seasons, Keitel has played 37 colts matches with East Perth with the talented key position player averaging almost 15 possessions and five marks a game.

The 19-year-old has the potential to further add to West Perth's options up forward this season having kicked 38 goals in 15 colts matches in 2014, and 39 in 18 games in 2013. But he also shown an equally ability to play key defensive roles as well.

DESPITE the added attention on the clash, West Perth is firmly focused on trying to beat Subiaco on Saturday at Medibank Stadium to record a third straight victory to head into next week's bye with.

West Perth has now strung together good wins over Peel Thunder and Perth at HBF Arena the past two weeks following the Round 1 loss to South Fremantle to be building some strong momentum heading into Saturday's clash with the reigning premiers at Leederville.

Subiaco had won its first two games of the season in style over Claremont and East Fremantle before losing to East Perth by 64 points on Good Friday so West Perth has every reason to expect a fired up Lions outfit this Saturday.

IT WAS an honour to run out and play my first, but somewhat less extravagant, milestone with the great man Andrew Strijk in our win last Saturday against Perth.

I’ve had the privilege of playing close by him for the majority of my career thus far and have learnt a hell of a lot. I’ve learnt that if I’m ever in trouble I can get the ball in his hands and more often than not he’ll get me out. He’s a great leader for us down back and always happy to suggest new things. He’s introduced many set plays in transitioning the ball out of our defence, all of which revolve around getting the ball to ‘the janitor’ (as he calls himself). As defenders, we are happy to oblige but I think Dan Hunt is still sour he didn’t get a personal mention in Strijky’s Breckler speech. It was great to get a big win to reward him for his loyalty to the club. There’s no better bloke that could become the newest life member of our great club.

SUBIACO and West Perth are the last two WAFL premiers, have no love lost between them, have both won two of their opening three games of the season and that should all equate to quite the battle at Medibank Stadium on Saturday.

West Perth won the 2013 WAFL premiership before going on to miss the finals altogether last year and then starting 2015 in disappointing fashion with a loss to South Fremantle.

However, the Falcons have now bounced back well beating Peel Thunder and Perth the past two weeks to build some momentum into the clash with Subiaco on Saturday leading into the Round 5 bye and then clash with Swan Districts on the Anzac Day weekend.
