CHRIS KEUNEN PLAYER COLUMN – ROUND 23

Friday, August 29, 2014 - 8:24 PM - by CHRIS KEUNEN

A WEST Perth premiership player will be writing a column for the club's website every week of the 2014 WAFL season. This week's edition is Chris Keunen's latest offering.

WELL we have now reached the final match of the season for the league side. It is a big game for our football club with two of the club's stalwarts retiring and my 150th league game for the West Perth Football Club.

I feel very privileged to be able to play 150 games for this club. There was a period where I didn’t think I would play 50 let alone become a life member. Life membership is a huge honour to be given and one that I see as being the greatest accolade anyone involved in any club can be awarded.

While you never play sport to get these types of honours it is a great way to be recognised for the effort and time you have put in to help the team and club succeed. I look forward to joining this illustrious club.

ROUND 23 PREVIEW V PERTH

Friday, August 29, 2014 - 6:16 PM - by CHRIS PIKE

WEST Perth looks to end its 2014 WAFL season with a win against Perth at Lathlain Park on Saturday and to do so to farewell Dan Hunt and Anthony Tsalikis with a victory, and to celebrate ruckman Chris Keunen's 150th match.

West Perth's best football this season has still been outstanding with the reigning premiers just unable to deliver the consistency that took them to the ultimate success last year.

Perth and West Perth have met just the once this season and that was way back in Round 3 at HBF Arena with the Falcons winning that contest by 18 points.

RAY BARTHOLOMEW PLAYER COLUMN – ROUND 23

Friday, August 29, 2014 - 1:32 AM - by RAY BARTHOLOMEW

A WEST Perth premiership player will be writing a column for the club's website every week of the 2014 WAFL season. This week's edition is Ray Bartholomew's latest offering discussing the retirements of Dan Hunt and Anthony Tsalikis.

OBVIOUSLY at first it's disappointing to hear that the boys are going to retire but in saying that at the same time you understand their reasoning for it. Obviously with Anthony he has more work commitments and wants to travel more with his girlfriend so it gives him the opportunity to do that and with Dan, he has a young family and with his position with work he wants to spend more time with that and obviously his family. Whether or not both of them play somewhere in the country next year I'm not sure, and they might, but if they don’t I'm sure they will stay in reasonable nick.

FALCONS GO DOWN TO ROARING TIGERS

Wednesday, August 27, 2014 - 7:36 AM - by CHRIS PIKE

WEST Perth couldn’t quite pull off a strong second half comeback at the Claremont Showground on Saturday with Claremont holding on to win the contest by six points.

West Perth only managed to kick the one goal in each of the first two quarters of the contest, but then hit back in the second half with the only goal of the third quarter and then with the first two goals of the fourth quarter.

That saw the Falcons close to within under a goal of the Tigers during the last quarter, but in the end an in-form Claremont team recorded the 8.6 (54) to 6.12 (48) victory.

FALCONS LEAVE RUN TOO LATE

Monday, August 25, 2014 - 9:38 AM

WEST Perth held Claremont to just one goal in the second half but the Falcons still lost to their opponents at the Showground on Saturday. As has been the case all year the Falcons found goals hard to come by and this was never more evident than in the first half when they kicked just two as opposed to the Tigers' seven. At no time did West Perth lead the game but it was a match that they could have won.

The conditions were sunny and fine but the ground appeared heavy as the ball rarely covered 50 metres during the course of the game. The Tigers dominated from the beginning of the first term and by the 24-minute mark led by three straight. Their goals went to Tom Ledger, Jack Bradshaw and Jackson Starcevich. The score to Bradshaw was his only one for the game as the dangerous forward was well held by Laine Rasmussen. The only Falcon goal for the quarter went to WAFL debutant Corey Chalmers who took the ball off hands to snap on his left from 30 metres out. Unfortunately for West Perth, Claremont replied right on the siren and they took an 18-point lead into the first change; 4.2 (26) to 1.2 (8).

AARON BLACK PLAYER COLUMN – ROUND 22

Saturday, August 23, 2014 - 11:01 AM - by AARON BLACK

A WEST Perth premiership player will be writing a column for the club's website every week of the 2014 WAFL season. This week's edition is Aaron Black's latest offering.

IT HAS been a pretty tough and frustrating year for us. We've been very inconsistent with our form and that's disappointing because when we play well we are pretty much unbeatable, but this year when we've played poorly we have played very poorly.

That is frustrating because we know how well we can play when we are on top of everything and playing to our game style. There has been some good things to come out of the season, though, especially with the young group coming through who have had the chance to show that they can play senior towards the end of the year.

ROUND 22 PREVIEW V CLAREMONT

Friday, August 22, 2014 - 5:06 PM - by CHRIS PIKE

WEST Perth might not be a chance of making the finals coming off winning last year's premiership, but a win on Saturday and the Falcons will not only end Claremont's finals hopes, but also replace the Tigers in fifth position on the ladder.

Without question, West Perth will be wanting to finish the 2014 season off on a high note and having won a tight battle with Peel last Saturday in Mandurah, another win over Claremont on Saturday with Perth to come in the final round could see the Falcons do that.

West Perth will also want to play well to see off retiring stars Dan Hunt and Anthony Tsalikis in the final two matches of their decorated careers with youngsters Kris Shannon, Luke Meadows, Max Alexander, Mitch van Berlo, Ben King and Brayden Antonio all looking to continue to impress.

TSALIKIS PROUD OF UNCONVENTIONAL CAREER WITH FALCONS

Thursday, August 21, 2014 - 1:42 PM - by CHRIS PIKE

ANTHONY Tsalikis has two matches left of a remarkable career that should see him end as West Perth's third most prolific goalkicker and it has been a remarkable journey considering he almost never played the game, and could have easily said it was all too hard due to work commitments.

Coming from a European background, Tsalikis grew up playing the round ball game and that's certainly the direction his father wanted him to continue to head in, but showing some good signs in junior football changed everything when he was a 16-year-old.

After his performances for Ocean Ridge, he was asked to come down to join the West Perth colts and has been with the club ever since.

Tsalikis is now a five-time West Perth leading goalkicker and likely will make it six in 2014 and has played 188 matches, represented Western Australia and kicked 332 goals to be equal third on the all-time list at the Falcons.
