A cold and windy day signalled winter is on its way and a match against 2nd placed South Fremantle signalling a tough contest was on its way. West Perth was up for the fight and while they did have more disposals than South Fremantle it ultimately was an inability to get those possessions in the front half that saw the result go South Fremantle’s way 4.9 (33) to 2.1 (13).
It was an even start with West Perth doing well across half back with Jeevna Heer intercepting, Brooke Hongell playing the general role and setting the example with some great run downs. Bianca Webb was getting loose across midfield providing a safe outlet for Karla Stagg to use as she backed herself in to leave her opponent.
The Falcons pressure was up and the Bulldogs were struggling to break free. Taylor Ferguson had a long shot at goal which faded late, but it wasn’t long before Tia Bergin provided the reward for the early momentum with a clever shot on goal.
South Fremantle did respond though with a quick reply, when they won the clearance, took a mark inside 50, that seemed to break the shackles and they added a second, Jess Roper was unlucky not to spoil it though after great tackle deep in defence. South Fremantle added a third when a pack formed about 25 metres out and the ball broke through to a waiting player out the back, giving the Bulldogs an 11-point advantage.
The momentum had shifted to South Fremantle during the last part of the first quarter and they were able to retain it with their fourth after several inside 50’s to start the second.
Elissa Price was working hard to create a contest in the ruck and across half back. With the ball living inside the South Fremantle 50 the Falcons were defending gamely, they were able to create a couple of encouraging drives forward but being shallow entries, they rebounded out.
For all the field dominance South Fremantle were only able to add the one goal to the score, the likes of Taylor Ferguson, Emily Bennett, Brooke Hongell and Matilda Bain able to prevent any scoring and repel attack after attack.
The third quarter was a battle between the arcs for most of the quarter until West Perth were able to break the deadlock, when Karla Stagg found Karry Plummer on the 50-metre arc, who kicked inside the centre square to Erin O’Brien, she wheeled around to Tia Bergin on the wing, who quickly played on to Keeley Oakes. Keeley kept running and kicked long deep inside 50 for Taylor Ferguson to run on a goal in a great end to end play that no South Fremantle played touched.
It was encouraging to win the quarter, be it by a small margin, but it showed that the team has the ability to restrict the scoring of top sides and put together passages of play that results in scores themselves.
The goal proved to be the last of the match as both team slogged it out in the last quarter, until the final siren sounded for a South Fremantle 20-point win.
