WAFLW - Round 13
Wednesday, June 7, 2023 - 10:08 AM
Nothing like a friendly West Perth versus East Perth game to watch on a glorious Sunday afternoon, a West Perth win over the ol’ foe would keep them in touch with the top teams, while East Perth searching for their first of their inaugural WAFLW season.
While East Perth certainly applied plenty of pressure and run in the first half, West Perth came out after the long break and played more of their own style and controlled play far better to run away with a good win 4.6 (30) to 2.2 (14).
The first quarter was all about East Perth controlling possession and while West Perth were able to defend, they couldn’t get forward of centre with any real conviction.
The Royals who were up and about were rewarded with first goal.
East Perth continued to bring the heat, which was causing West Perth to fumble a lot and certaihnly threw them off their game.
Ebony Jackson, Karla Stagg and Liliana Grassenis were doing the best deep in defence and kept the Royals to the single goal.
West Perth lifted the work rate but, East Perth were able to match it and with weight of numbers at every contest and creating lots of turnovers giving the Royals good ground position and resulted in their second goal.
Good play by Taylor across half back who was one of West Perth’s best, kicked a long ball to Emily Bennett who found Keeley Oakes out wide, where she picked up and ran to goal square where Grace Betti was able to goal.
Erin O’Brien was also defending gamely and repelled any further chances East Perth had of scoring, while at the other end a strong mark from Georgia Cowman and a subsequent 50 metre penalty made for a simple goal, giving the Falcons a narrow lead at half time.
West Perth came out of the main break with new attitude, Tia Bergin claimed a loose ball and scored an early goal. The midfield upped the work rate and were keeping the ball in forward half, Cameron was winning taps, Emily Bennett was working hard in and under as she normally does.
Emily was rewarded for her efforts, when she snapped truly from a stoppage in the forward pocket.
The Falcons continued to win centre clearances and combined with good forward pressure, by Amber Rundle who was very active across half forward helping to intercept and keep inside 50.
Good quarter from West Perth who managed to keep control for the whole quarter, the one inside 50 from East Perth was met by Karla Stagg who promptly repelled.
The last quarter saw a bit of feeling in the game, West Perth were able to keep out of defensive 50, with some heavy tackles, creating turnovers.
Jess Roper using her pace and effective switches and Matilda Bain played well for the limited times it made it into the forward line for East Perth.
The majority of the quarter was played with plenty of packs and stoppages, which worked to the Falcons advantage as they ran out 16-point winners.
